How to Fix Stubborn Trash and why it won’t delete

    Part 1

When you look for the Trash and their problems on the web then can find several of them that include trash can not be emptied using regular Empty operation. There are many reasons why the user does not have sufficient privileges to delete items. Sometimes the items are blocked or are already in use by another application. Reasons can be several but the finder will display the yellow warning triangle and stubbornly refuses to do as it’s told.

When you give the command to empty trash and it won’t do that then there is no one specific cause of this kind of behavior and so there is no specific solution for it too. But there are manual deleting methods that will always help you to delete and empty trash even if the file system has been corrupted.

There are two different techniques

  1. The GUI Approach
  2. The CLI Approach

Mac OS X 10.3.9, 10.4 Tiger, 10.5 Leopard and supports Snow Leopard

The GUI Approach

How to Delete (Insufficient Privileges)

“The operation cannot be completed because you don’t have sufficient privileges for dah-di-dah”.
Hit continue to remove as much as possible

Solution 1: Manual Unlocking

Some of them items present in the trash may be locked although the locked items are generally unlocked and removed automatically and in some cases they are not. Open the trash and check the remaining items, particularly the ‘dah-di-dah’. Select each item and turn hitting the command-l to open the finder’s show info window. There you can check out whether the file is locked or not. If it is checked then uncheck it and then press OK. If you are not the owner of that file then you can not be done that step. Then try Solution 2.

Solution 2: Third Party Super Trashers

There are many software companies that are making the super trashing utilities that will empty the trash even if there are file permissions over it. Some of the products in this category are:

  1. SuperGetInfo from Bare Bones Software
  2. BatChmod fro ArbySoft
  3. FileXaminer from Gideon Softworks

How to Delete (Items in Use)

If the finder reports:

“The Operation Could not be completed because the item dah-di-dah is in use”
then hit continue to remove as much as possible

Solution 3: Closing Items

There is the possibility that the item which you are trying to delete is not closed and from the item name you may be able to guess which application is responsible for this. Then quit the application and try again. If problem persists then try logging out and login back. Finally reboot and try empty trash.

While doing any of these steps if you think that you have accidentally deleted any important files or directories that contains important files then you should go for Trash Recovery Application as it will recover the files from which are deleted by any means including the tools that are made for the file deletion.
